舒馬赫於1973年出版的《小即是美》(Small Is Beautiful: a study of economics as if people mattered?

'Small is Beautiful' 5-day Residential Workshop
1. Objective

- Spend five days with the world-renowned environmentalist and educator, Dr Satish Kumar

- Gain insight and inspiration to move forward with some solutions to making life more sustainable

- Engage with nature and experience the magic of the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden site

- Be part of a like-minded group learning, discussing, harvesting and laughing together

- Visit one of Hong Kong's last remaining wetlands, and interact with a community of local people who are starting to put 'Small is Beautiful'
principles into practice

E. F. Schumacher's 1973 book 'Small Is Beautiful: a study of economics as if people mattered' is among the 100 most influential books published since World War II as ranked by The Times Literary Supplement. Small, simple and nonviolent were his three philosophical precepts. The ideas expressed in Small Is Beautiful are as relevant today as they were 41 years ago. Schumacher's Small Is Beautiful paved the way for twenty-first century environmentalism and alternative economics.

Schumacher's work offers a crucial message for the modern world, where, over the last 25 years, deregulated capitalism has been at war with the earth; regarding nature as a resource, separate from humans, to be dominated and exploited; where the atmosphere has been used as a free waste dump; and where free-market globalization has greatly increased consumerism and accelerated the rate of climate change and biodiversity loss just at the time when we needed to pause, reduce, restore and harmonize, to give us a chance of planetary survival. Small is beautiful is a sustainable way forward.

Dr Satish Kumar will lead this five-day, residential 'Small Is Beautiful' workshop exploring how this concept can be applied today to combat climate change and harmonize our relationship with the earth. Satish is a world-renowned educator, friend and collaborator of the economist E.F. Schumacher, editor of the Resurgence & Ecologist magazine and co-founder of the Schumacher College in England.

We have also invited Lam Chiu Ying, the former Director of Hong Kong Observatory, and Chow Shun Ming, the Development Director of Fair Circle and lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy at Hong Kong Polytechnic University to bring local flavor.

Teachers: Dr Satish Kumar Raised as a Jain monk from the age of nine, Satish Kumar became a campaigner for land reform at eighteen, working to turn Gandhi's vision of a renewed India and peaceful world into reality. Concerned about nuclear proliferation, he later undertook an 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington no money, through deserts, mountains and storms to deliver a message of peace to the leaders of the four nuclear powers at the time. In 1973, he settled in England and was invited, by E.F. Schumacher, to be the editor of Resurgence magazine, which recently became Resurgence and Ecologist. Under his editorship the magazine has become, according to the Guardian newspaper, 'The spiritual and artistic flagship of the green movement".

In 1991, Satish co-founded Schumacher College, an international residential education centre named after E. F. Schumacher, which aims to provide transformative learning for sustainable living. Satish writes, teaches and leads workshops internationally on holistic economics, reverential ecology, holistic education and voluntary simplicity. His books include 'Soil Soul Society', 'No Destination', 'Earth Pilgrim' and 'You Are Therefore I Am'.

Mr Lam Chiu Ying (Visiting teacher) Mr Lam is a meteorologist by training. He served in the Hong Kong Observatory for 35 years before retiring in 2009 as its Director.

He popularized the hobby of bird-watching in Hong Kong, which helped to inspire a new generation of people who care deeply about nature in Hong Kong. He is a vocal advocate for conservation and a simple life-style. He frequently gives lectures to a wide spectrum of audiences, on subjects such as leadership, climate change, sustainable development, life-style and happiness. His books include 'Sky and Earth Talk Not', 'Thoughts on Wing' and 'Where for Peace in the Changing World'.

Mr Chow Sung Ming (Visiting teacher) Mr Chow is the Development Director of Fair Circle, a Board Member of the Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation, Institute of Social Impact Analysts, Libre Research Community and the Land Justice League. He also teaches Sociology and Social Policy in Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His recent publications include 'Sharing Cities/Sharing Hong Kong', 'Money Centric: 7 Critiques of Industrial and Population Policy in Hong Kong', 'A City of Marketplaces' and 'A Metropolitan of Stolen Spaces'. He is currently working on a new title, Half Farmer Half Chef, which explores a fair trade and organic food project in Hong Kong.
